What I’m Watching This Week
I’ve been a little all-over-the-place with my TV watching over the last few weeks. Part of that is the arrival of so much new TV with the fall season starting up, and part of it is a lack of something good to binge right now. I finished a re-watch of The Vampire Diaries a few weeks ago and while I’ve been trying to work my way through The Originals, I just don’t find it as propulsive. Or enjoyable.
Last year I didn’t really pick up any new TV, at least on broadcast. This year I’ve committed to sampling more, even though I went into things like A Million Little Pieces and Manifest with my skepticism dialed up to 11. I’m still watching Manifest five weeks later, though. I don’t know if I’d say that I like it, but it makes for good background noise (and their commitment to airplane-themed episode titles makes me laugh, especially since first episodes are almost always titled “Pilot,” and theirs is no exception). A bunch of other things have been stacking up on my DVR: I Feel Bad and Happy Together and Single Parents… I’m trying to catch up with You, but I have to be in the right mood for it.
Something I’ve very much been in the mood for is 2018 updates on my favorite witchy shows from the late 90s.
I was a little worried that, despite the Sally Draper shaped hole in my heart, I’d have trouble adjusting to a dark and spooky Sabrina Spellman in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I loved the Sabrina of the 90s, it was the first TV show I really obsessed over, and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it without the puns and the talking cat and the portal to the other realm in the linen closet. Chilling Adventures is about as different as a show can be when the characters all have the same goofy names, and it suffers from a lot of the same writing problems that plague Riverdale (ooooof, the exposition), but it’s fun in a campy way, and stylish as (literal) hell. I’ll keep watching until it scares me so much I have to stop.
New!Charmed isn’t as much of a departure from the original, but it doesn’t feel beholden to the Halliwells either. The first couple of episodes weren’t perfect, they had the air of a show still trying to figure things out, but they also had their moments (vanquishing demons with science and selfie cams!), and tonight’s third episode was a lot stronger. The dynamic between the sisters feels more familial, and the each had an opportunity to shine. I’m really looking forward to seeing where the show goes over the course of the first season.
And then there’s baseball, which weirdly consumed me over the last couple of weeks. I ended up going to game 3 of the NLCS playoffs, and even though the Dodgers lost it kind of sucked me in. I watched a lot of baseball in the aftermath, including the majority of Friday night’s 18 inning, 7+ hour game. I was thinking about going to bed at 8:30 on Friday, but I was committed to watching to the end, and the end just would not come. When the Dodgers finally won at 12:30 in the morning there were fireworks going off in my neighborhood, and I finally got to go to bed. I have no clue if I’ll keep up with the Dodgers next year, but having something to cheer for over the last two weeks has been fun.
Next week: Doctor Who, Busy Tonight, and Thursday night TV.
